Straight Talk Testing Vending Machine Phone Sales

Straight Talk Wireless Vending Machine at Walmart

Straight Talk Wireless is piloting the sale of pre-activated phones through vending machines at select Walmart locations, according to Wave7 Research’s latest prepaid report, which cites a story from Fast Company. David Kim, Chief Revenue Officer of Verizon Value, said the goal is to simplify phone activation for customers who may find the at-home process confusing. “A lot of our customers, they get confused with what to do at home. It drives calls to care. It drives customer dissatisfaction,” Kim stated.

The vending machines handle the entire activation process internally, including identifying, tracking, and activating each device. They require an internet connection to function.

Pre-activated phones work immediately out of the box, removing the need for customers to manually activate them or add credit. Verizon appears to be aiming to reduce support calls, shorten customer wait times, and potentially cut staffing costs by using these vending machines.

Even customers who aren’t ready to make a purchase can use the machines to browse available phone and plan options without waiting for a sales associate. Kim noted that for those who do need help, shorter wait times could result as others complete transactions through the machines.

Currently, the pilot includes just five Walmart locations, including one in Athens, Texas, where the machines have already sold hundreds of phones. Verizon plans to expand to about 50 additional Walmart stores by the end of the year. The machines currently accept credit and debit cards, with support for cash expected to be tested soon.

Straight Talk Wireless, a Verizon Value brand, is sold exclusively at Walmart. Verizon also offers other prepaid brands in stores, such as Total Wireless, Simple Mobile, Tracfone, Verizon Prepaid, and Walmart Family Mobile. The company is considering expanding vending machine availability to other retail partners and potentially including more of its brands.

Straight Talk Has Offered Vending Machines Before

This isn’t the first time a wireless provider has attempted to offer sales through vending machines. In fact, it’s not even the first time Straight Talk Wireless has used them. Jeff Moore, Principal of Wave7 Research recalls seeing one in a Las Vegas airport over a decade ago. A 2013 YouTube video also shows one outside a former K-Mart store.

According to this Reddit post and article from 9to5Google, Google Fi and other brands have sold SIM cards in vending machines before. However, none of those brands have offered phones like Straight Talk.

Customers will be able to choose from a range of phones from brands such as Apple, Samsung, TCL, and others, with various price points available.

This is a fascinating experiment.  If successful, there could be reduced need for interaction with wireless reps.  However, there is no guarantee that consumers will react positively to this process.” – Jeff Moore, Principal of Wave7 Research

Total Wireless and Straight Talk Now Have Unlimited Tablet Plans From $10/Month

Total Wireless New Unlimited Tablet plans

Verizon Value brands, Total Wireless and Straight Talk Wireless have each released two unlimited tablet plans. The two plans are priced at $10/month and $20/month when bundled with a phone plan. However, if purchased separately, they become significantly more expensive, costing $50/month and $60/month, respectively. Taxes and fees are included in the pricing.

Tablet Plan Comparison

Both carriers offer identical plans, detailed below:

$10/Month$20/Month
DataUnlimitedUnlimited
5G Ultra Wideband (UW) AccessNo*Yes*
Hotspot5GB30GB
Video Streams720p1080p

Clarification on the 5G UW Disclaimer

A small discrepancy exists regarding the 5G UW speed. On Total Wireless’s tablet plans page, a disclaimer states:

“Speeds up to 25 Mbps when on 5G Ultra Wideband.”

However, the broadband facts label for the plan lists typical download speeds of up to 634 Mbps, creating some confusion.

It is likely that the $10 base plan has a 25Mbps speed cap—either as a general speed restriction or a cap when connecting to 5G UW. Straight Talk’s website does not include this disclaimer, but it likely applies there as well.

There is one minor notable difference between Total Wireless and Straight Talk’s tablet plans. A SIM card for a tablet will cost you $2.99 from Total Wireless while it’s $4.88 from Straight Talk.

These tablet plans are only intended for use in tablets. They are not compatible with routers or home internet setups. Separate data-only plans from each provider are available for those use cases.

Verizon Value’s Perspective

“For many people, managing multiple devices can be costly,” said David Kim, Chief Revenue Officer at Verizon Value. “Both Total Wireless and Straight Talk understand the importance of staying connected across multiple devices without breaking the bank. Our new Unlimited Tablet Plans are the most affordable among no-contract wireless providers, and are designed to make it easier and more budget-friendly for our customers to enjoy the benefits of real, unlimited data.”

New Tablets Available

To coincide with the plan launches, Total Wireless and Straight Talk have also launched three new tablets. Online pricing for each tablet is the same from both providers and shown below.

  • TCL Tab 8 Plus $159.99
  • TCL Tab 10 NXTPaper 5G, $219.99
  • Samsung A9+ $239.99

The TCL Tab 8 Plus is not a 5G capable device. So I would avoid that one if you want the best possible experience with a tablet on Verizon’s network otherwise you may be more likely to run into a slow or congested network.

Total Wireless has been rapidly opening up branded stores. The latest prepaid report from Wave7 Research stated they now have over one thousand opened. Customers looking for a tablet will find them discounted there for a limited time:

  • TCL Tab 8 $29.99
  • TCL 5GNXTPaper $49.99
  • Samsung Galaxy A9+ 5G $99.99

The discounts are available to new customers when adding a tablet line with a 5G unlimited tablet plan.

According to the Pew Research Center, 98% of Americans now own a cell phone. With that market seemingly saturated, providers must look for other ways to get consumers connected to grow their subscriber bases. Offering data only plans for tablets, hotspots, and home internet are a way to do that.

Straight Talk Wireless Adds Unlimited Priority Data, 5G UW and More

Straight Talk on display at Walmart

Straight Talk Wireless updated its plans today with multiple new features. The updates target Straight Talk’s $55/month Gold and $65/month Platinum unlimited plans. Upgrade highlights include:

  • 5G Ultrawide band support – you now get the fastest data speeds possible on Verizon’s network
  • Unlimited priority data – data access is now prioritized over other users on the Verizon network. Data speeds won’t slow down compared to other customers on the network when the network is busy.
  • Increased hotspot – The $55 plan now includes 30GB hotspot data up from 10GB, the $65 Gold plan now includes unlimited hotspot data. However, hotspot data speeds are limited to 5Mbps
  • 1080p video streaming – 1080p video streaming when connected to Verizon’s 5G UW network. 720p streaming when on their 5G or 4G LTE networks. By default, videos will stream at 480p on 5G/LTE and 720p on 5G UW. Customers will have to turn on full speed streaming to get the fastest speeds.
  • Annual device credits – subscribers will receive $100 in device rewards credits every year.
  • Home internet discount – subscribers will be able to add Straight Talk’s home internet plan for $35/month instead of $45/month

The plans are available online immediately. They’ll be available in Walmart stores starting on January 20. Existing customers will be upgraded to the new features automatically.

“We gathered insights into what our consumers are looking for, and that is blazing-fast connectivity, unlimited premium data, device credits, and more hotspot capabilities – so we are excited to bring those offerings to them with Straight Talk’s enhanced plans,” said David Kim, SVP & CRO of Verizon Value. “Our goal is to provide unparalleled value and connectivity to our customers, ensuring they have the best possible experience with Straight Talk. These new plans are a testament to our commitment to meeting our customers where they are and exceeding their expectations.”

Straight Talk Plans Now Inline With Other Verizon Value Brands

The plan changes were necessary to bring Straight Talk’s offerings more inline with offerings from its sister brands that include Total Wireless and Visible by Verizon among others. Many of these same plan improvements like the addition of reward credits, unlimited priority data and 5G UW network access were brought to the Total Wireless brand in July 2024, as reported by BestMVNO. More recently, Visible by Verizon updated video streaming on its flagship plan from 480p to 720p.

Straight Talk’s flagship unlimited plans are priced the same as Total Wireless. However, unless the Walmart+ subscription is important to you, Total Wireless’s two comparable flagship unlimited plans offer a better value in my opinion for the following reasons:

  • Higher reward credit – You get a $100 reward credit after 6 months and another after an additional 6 months instead of having to wait for a year for just $100
  • International roaming – You get international roaming in 15+ countries including Canada and Mexico.
  • Calling and texting to international numbers – text to over 200 destinations, call over 85
  • 4th line free – if you have 4 lines you’ll get your 4th free
  • Taxes and fees included in the price
  • 5 year price lock – Total Wireless plans include a five year price lock guarantee

A couple of other differences to point out is Total Wireless’s plans include a Disney+ subscription, and Straight Talk’s base Gold unlimited flagship plan includes 30GB of hotspot data instead of the 15GB included in Total Wireless’s comparable plan. Total Wireless is also offering 50% off their plans to BYOD customers, a promo Straight Talk doesn’t have.

Verizon is home to many prepaid wireless brands. One of their other big brands, Simple Mobile has yet to get these additional service feature improvements. So that is a brand to keep an eye on.

What do you think of Straight Talk’s updated plans. Are they something you’ll consider switching to? Comment below.

Straight Talk Introduces $25/Month BYOD Unlimited Plan, Exclusively At Walmart

Straight Talk Offering $25 BYOP Unlimited Plan At Walmart

Thanks to a tip from Dennis Bournique from prepaidcompare.net, BestMVNO has learned that Straight Talk Wireless has introduced a new unlimited data plan for $25/month. This plan is exclusively available at Walmart, both online and in stores (Update: it’s also now available on the Straight Talk website). It is only for “bring your own phone” customers who are new to Straight Talk. The cost of the SIM kit and plan is $29.88 plus tax.

The plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and high-speed 5G data. It does have a few things to be aware of. Customers on the plan will not be allowed to switch to another phone during the year (Update 08/12/2024: customers can switch phones, they just can’t switch to a phone that’s been active on Straight Talk within the past year). They also have to have autopay billing setup and be a part of Straight Talk’s loyalty rewards program. After a year of service, customers will be eligible for a $200 credit to upgrade their phone.

The $25 BYOP unlimited plan does not include hotspot data and it does not have 5G Ultra-Wideband connectivity. Without 5G Ultra-Wideband (5G UW) support, you will be unable to have the fastest data speeds possible on Verizon’s network. Given a lack of 5G UW connectivity, the plan is almost certainly deprioritized. A deprioritized plan means that during times of network congestion, other customers on the Verizon network who have a plan with premium priority data will have faster data speeds than you. Video streaming is highly likely to be capped at 480p.

$25 Unlimited Plan Offering In Retail Is A Big Deal

This plan is a big deal for Straight Talk and it is an important price point between carrier-owned prepaid brands. Every carrier-owned prepaid brand is now offering at least one unlimited plan for $25/month for single lines. This is also the first $25 unlimited plan from a Verizon-owned brand to have a national retail physical store presence. It offers some competition to Metro by T-Mobile who also offers a $25 BYOP unlimited plan in stores, albeit through Metro dealers. BestMVNO is unaware of the offer being marketed at Walmart.

Some of you reading this are likely asking, what’s the point of this plan when you can get a very similar plan from Visible by Verizon? To start, this is a plan marketed towards in-store shoppers. Someone who will walk by a display and see it, and someone who may have a retail associate pitch it to them. It also offers a physical location for someone to go to if they need help. Visible is not sold in stores giving it less exposure to the public and there are no physical locations to go for help.

Informed shoppers though, will recognize that Visible offers a better unlimited plan deal for most. Visible’s plan includes taxes and fees making it a cheaper offering than Straight Talk’s. Visible’s plan also includes calling and texting to Mexico and Canada, something that Straight Talk’s offering appears to lack. Visible base unlimited plan is also currently available at a discount. Customers can get the plan for $20/month for two years when they signup using the promo code CHAMP.

Straight Talk Joins Trend Of Wireless Brands Sponsoring NASCAR

Straight Talk Inks Partnership With NASCAR

Straight Talk Wireless has announced a partnership with NASCAR as detailed in this press release from Verizon and in the latest prepaid report from Wave7 Research. The term length of the sponsorship has not been disclosed other than it is a multi-year deal. The sponsorship also makes Straight Talk an Official Partner of Homestead-Miami Speedway, and as a result, the NASCAR Cup Series playoff race slated for October 27, is now the Straight Talk Wireless 400.

Straight Talk Wireless is a Verizon-owned prepaid brand sold exclusively in Walmart stores. NASCAR and Straight Talk have teamed up to showcase “NASCAR on Tour” at a handful of Walmart parking lots in Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The tour will take place from August 21 to October 27 and will feature driver appearances, giveaways, and exclusive special offers including a buy one month get one month free promotion. The Straight Talk Wireless website has all the event stops listed. The first one takes place on August 21 at 2 PM at a Walmart in Daytona Beach, Florida.

NASCAR on Tour isn’t the only event Straight Talk is hosting through Walmart. The provider is also offering free ice cream as part of a “Back to School” promotion at a few Walmart locations in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Straight Talk is just the latest of a growing list of wireless providers involved in NASCAR sponsorships over the last few years. To start 2024, Consumer Cellular announced that it signed to be the Official Wireless partner for Brad Keselowski and RFK racing for the 2024 NASCAR season and beyond. Brad and a Consumer Cellular decked-out car have been featured in a Consumer Cellular TV ad.

MobileX sponsored Will Brown and RCR racing earlier this year in his NASCAR Cup Series debut. Brown drove a MobileX-painted Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Last year, MobileX sponsored Brodie Kostecki in his NASCAR Cup Series debut.

In 2023, Patriot Mobile sponsored JJ Yeley and Rick Ware Racing in the Ally 400 NASCAR race. And in 2021, Boom Mobile sponsored Joey Hand with Rick Ware Racing for a NASCAR event.

It’s hard to get a good read on if there’s an age demographic wireless providers are trying to target with their NASCAR partnerships. For instance, Statista claims that 57% of USA NASCAR fans are aged 44 or younger, whereas Blackbook Motorsport reports that the bigger percentage of USA fans who watch NASCAR fit into an older demographic.

No matter the demographic, these sponsorships bring the eyes of millions to the sponsors’ wireless brands. There are typically several dozen televised NASCAR events per year [1, 2], with an average viewership of around 3 to 4 million and the biggest events drawing in around 6 million or more. However, one author noted, that the average viewership may be around half of what it was ten years ago. NASCAR doesn’t release its attendance figures, which have also been dwindling over the years, but some races like the Daytona 500 still attract live audiences of 150k+.

“I think that the NASCAR partnership is a good fit for Straight Talk. Straight Talk is only sold at Walmart, which is a very strong retail brand in rural America. NASCAR is popular in rural areas. This is a good match.” – Jeff Moore, Principal of Wave7 Research

Total by Verizon $99.99 Google Pixel 6a Black Friday 2023 Deal

Straight Talk and Total by Verizon have their limited time holiday deals out. The offers are highlighted by a $49 iPhone SE from Straight Talk, and a $99.99 Google Pixel 6a and free Samsung Galaxy A13 5G from Total by Verizon. The $49 iPhone SE from Straight Talk offer is available exclusively at Walmart, otherwise it’s $99 direct from the Straight Talk website. The Total by Verizon offers are available online through the Total by Verizon website. Fortunately they don’t have too much red tape.

Straight Talk’s $49 iPhone SE And Other Holiday Offer Details

The $49 3rd gen iPhone SE offer will be available at Walmart through 11/26. It does require in-store activation. No specific plans are advertised as being required to get it. However, there is a limit of two devices allowed per customer, and it’s not available for family plans.

The $99 iPhone SE direct from the Straight Talk website requires the purchase of an unlimited plan priced $45 or higher.

Total by Verizon’s $99.99 Google Pixel 6a, Free Samsung Galaxy A13 5G Offer Details

Total by Verizon’s $99.99 Google Pixel 6a offer doesn’t look like it has any red tape. It appears to be available for new and current customers at that price. It can be financed for as low as $4.17/month. It can be bundled with any service plan offered by Total by Verizon.

The free Samsung Galaxy A13 5G offer only has a small amount of fine print. In order to get the device for free, you must port your number to Total by Verizon.

Check out these other holiday offers from Total by Verizon. If there’s any fine print to worry about, it will be highlighted.

  • Moto G Play 2023 – $49.99, available to new and current customers
  • iPhone 11 64GB – $149.99, available on $50 and $60 plans only and requires verifying your identity

Total by Verizon’s $50 and $60 plans both include unlimited high-speed data at up to 5G data speeds. However, the $50 plan is not advertised as having access to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network, it’s fastest 5G network, whereas the $60 plan does. The $50 plan also only has 10GB of hotspot and a 6-month subscription to Disney+, compared to 20GB of hotspot on the $60 plan with a Disney+ subscription that will remain active for as long as you are on the plan.

Straight Talk and Total by Verizon offers are scheduled to be available through 11/26/2023.

Jim Gaffigan In New TV Ad Wants You To Buy A Straight Talk Multi-Line Plan

Jim Gaffigan Featured In New Straight Talk Wireless TV Ad

Last Friday, Verizon Wireless announced that it had hired a new celebrity spokesperson for its prepaid brand Straight Talk Wireless. That spokesperson is actor and comedian Jim Gaffigan. In the years prior, actor Ed O’Neil fulfilled that role in a less pronounced way as served as the voiceover in Straight Talk TV ads for at least five years. His role with Straight Talk ended in mid-2021. Gaffigan, however, will not only be heard but also seen in the new TV ads.

According to iSpot, the first TV ad featuring Jim Gaffigan started airing on 8/4/23. The ad begins with Gaffigan reaching for a microphone inside of a Walmart store where he tells shoppers to “use your loved ones to save money on wireless.” Gaffigan then walks around the store cracking awkward jokes at shoppers as he points out that family can save you money. The ad finishes with a voiceover that states that more lines means more savings with Straight Talk. Straight Talk’s Silver Unlimited plan is then pitched at a price point of $25/line with four lines. The full ad can be viewed below.

A Verizon press release states that it’s Straight Talk’s first live-action TV ad campaign in four years. “Jim’s comedy and work ethic embodies who our customer is: observant, hard-working, a little bit skeptical of something that might seem too good to be true, and loves to talk about their family,” said Cheryl Gresham, Chief Marketing Officer of the Verizon Value organization. “We immediately thought of Jim as the perfect partner to explain the value in our new plans and to do it in a really entertaining way.”

It’s unknown how many ads Gaffigan will appear in. But his comments suggest multiple TV ads have already been filmed. “The commercials we made inside Walmart stores were hilarious. Working with Straight Talk was fun and joining them on a campaign that helps people save more money is the cherry on top,” Gaffigan stated in the Verizon press release.

Straight Talk has been advertising its multi-line plans on TV and radio since they were first announced on July 24th. There are two other TV ads airing featuring the multi-line savings pitch which you can view here and here. Ironically, one features an animation of a standup comedian. Straight Talk has been using standup comedian animations in several of its TV ads since at least April 2023.

Celebrity spokespersons for prepaid wireless and MVNO brands may be getting more common. In March 2022, Ted Danson was tapped to be Consumer Cellular’s spokesperson. Last December, Luis Fonsi was brought on to pitch Metro by T-Mobile. Dan Levy had a brief stint with Visible by Verizon. And of course, there’s Ryan Reynolds who regularly stars in Mint Mobile TV ads. Reynolds however, is also a co-owner of Mint Mobile which has agreed to be acquired by T-Mobile.

PureTalk And Straight Talk Are Both Running TV Ads For A Free Phone Offer

Free Motorola G Stylus 5G Offer On Display At Walmart

PureTalk and Straight Talk have both launched TV ads touting a free phone offer. For Straight Talk, the ad and offer represent an evolution of the brand since being taken over by Verizon. Prior to Verizon’s ownership, Straight Talk really didn’t offer or advertise free phones. PureTalk, the longtime AT&T MVNO, is also not known to have marketed any free phones through TV advertising in its past either. In fact, it’s pretty rare for an independently owned MVNO to offer free phones to begin with.

PureTalk is offering the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G for free with number port-in and the purchase of its $55 unlimited plan that includes 60GB of 5G data before throttling to 256Kbps. It’s made free by way of an instant $199.99 discount on the device. However, PureTalk does state a 30-month agreement is required to get the phone, but doesn’t go into any detail about what that means. Best guess is that the phone will remain locked for 30 months and/or if you leave PureTalk before 30 months is up you may be billed for the prorated cost of the device.

Straight Talk is offering a Free Motorola G Power at Walmart for new lines of service and port-ins with in-store activation on a $45 or higher rate plan. The $45 plan includes unlimited high-speed data with an allowance of 5GB of data for mobile hotspot.

PureTalk “Free 5G Samsung Phone” TV Ad

PureTalk’s TV ad, “Free 5G Samsung Phone” launched mid-May and has aired a couple of dozen times. It features a voiceover with a callout of other providers’ free phone offers. The callout tells viewers that PureTalk knows that they are leary of offers from other providers with hefty strings attached like activation fees, 4-line requirements, and expensive contracts. The ad continues by stating that only PureTalk offers a free 5G Samsung phone without feeling like you’ve been duped. You can watch it below.

Wave7 Research has also noted that the free phone offer is being pitched by Sean Hannity during his show and the $55 phone plan is being pushed during both Hannity and Clay Travis & Buck Sexton talk shows.

Straight Talk Wireless “No Offense, Free Motorola G Power” TV Ad

Wave7 Research noted in its latest prepaid report that Straight Talk Wireless’s TV ad touting the free Motorola G Power began airing in April. It has been aired over 7k times thus far. The ad features an animated pencil drawing of a comedian who asks his audience, “Have you noticed everything that follows ‘no offense’ is offensive?” To the audience’s laughter, he continues “No offense, but you’re overpaying for your wireless plan.” The ad finishes with a voiceover and says that unlimited plans from Straight Talk start at $35/month and that you can get a free phone on select plans at Walmart. You can watch the full ad below.

The Motorola G Power 2022 isn’t the only phone being offered for free by Straight Talk at Walmart. The Motorola G Stylus 5G 2022 is also free but does require the in-store purchase and activation of a 3-month plan. Wave7 Research has observed Walmart store signage highlighting the free Stylus offer. The free Motorola G Power phone deal is scheduled to be available at least until 6/18/23. The Moto G Stylus 5G offer is scheduled to remain in place at least until 8/31/23.

“Free phones at Walmart is definitely a trend in the prepaid industry. Metro by T-Mobile has been offering four Android models for free at Walmart and Straight Talk is doing this with two Motorola smartphones, while Cricket Wireless and Verizon Prepaid have also been offering a free phone at Walmart. The fact that Straight Talk has a TV ad pitching a free phone, as does Pure Talk, adds strength to the trend.”

Straight Talk Becomes 1st Carrier Owned Prepaid Brand With Home Internet

https://www.bestphoneplans.net/

Straight Talk Wireless is the first carrier-owned prepaid brand to introduce a home internet plan. Straight Talk, owned by Verizon Wireless, formally announced the plan today. Hints of the plan’s launch were leaked a couple of weeks ago when displays started popping up in some Walmart stores.

Straight Talk’s home internet plan will cost $45/month for unlimited data and requires the one-time purchase of a $99 router. The plan does seem to be tax inclusive. Straight Talk is advertising that there are no contracts or hidden fees, “the price is what you pay,” their website reads.

Depending on their locations, customers will receive either 4G LTE or 5G network service. Download speeds are advertised as being anywhere between 25-100 Mbps. Typical upload speeds will be in the range of 3-10Mbps. The router, made by Arcadyan Technology, has two ethernet ports, supports WiFi 6, and can connect up to 130 devices.

The new service plan can now be purchased online through the Straight Talk wireless website. It is also available online at Walmart and in nearly 2,000 Walmart stores. The service plan will not be available to use everywhere, but you can use this location checker to see if it’s available in your area.

Fixed wireless access (FWA), such as the new home internet offering from Straight Talk, has been dubbed 5G’s killer app by some analysts across several industries. Indeed, FWA providers have been primarily coming online over the last year, with T-Mobile-based providers taking the lead.

Last year, T-Mobile announced its commercial launch of 5G home internet. And earlier this year it was introduced in Metro by T-Mobile stores. However, Metro by T-Mobile does not sell its own branded home internet plan like Straight Talk is now doing for Verizon. T-Mobile’s 5G Home Internet plan, which is sold in both Metro and T-Mobile stores, costs $50/month with autopay.

Last October, BestMVNO reported on the launch of Earthlink’s fixed wireless plans, which now start at $64.95/month for 50GB of data. And earlier this year, BestMVNO reported that Ultra Mobile launched its own fixed wireless plans. Ultra’s plans start at $54.99/month for 25GB of data. Both providers use the T-Mobile network for coverage.

Other carrier owned prepaid brands including DISH’s Boost Mobile, AT&T’s Cricket Wireless, and T-Mobile’s Metro by T-Mobile have yet to launch any branded home internet plans.

T-Mobile is the only other brand to at least try and push home internet through one of its prepaid brands, but it is still a T-Mobile-branded service, not Metro-branded home internet.

Straight Talk’s home internet plan is eligible for an ACP discount. Persons and households who qualify for the benefit will receive a $30 monthly discount on the plan. Those living on tribal lands can get it for free.

Verizon has also released a video filmed within a Walmart store that showcases and talks about Straight Talk’s Walmart partnership and the new home internet plan. You can watch the video below.

Verizon Pushing Straight Talk Users To Its Network, Simple Mobile Has Verizon SIMs

Straight Talk Wireless Display At Local To BestMVNO Area Walmart

In November of 2021, Verizon Wireless closed on its acquisition of Tracfone and all of its associated brands including Straight Talk Wireless, Simple Mobile, and Walmart Family Mobile among others. In February, BestMVNO reported that Tracfone brands were preparing to be available exclusively on the Verizon network. On March 1, Tracfone Master Agents/Distributors were said to have stopped purchasing AT&T and T-Mobile SIMs for the Tracfone brand. Consumers would be able to still activate Tracfone on any network at least through 6/30/22. But after that, dealers would no longer be able to activate AT&T or T-Mobile SIMs for their customers through their activation portals.

Verizon now seems to be taking the next step in trying to push its Tracfone and related brand customers over to its network.

Some Straight Talk customers using networks other than Verizon have stated on Reddit that they have started receiving text messages from Straight Talk. The texts inform them that Straight Talk will soon start hijacking their outbound calls (excluding 911 calls) by playing a recording that states they can switch over to the Verizon network and get a free SIM with a free month of service. It is unknown how many of Straight Talk’s 9.5 million customers are on other networks besides Verizon, although an overwhelming majority are believed to be on Verizon. In most Walmart’s, Straight Talk phones have been and continue to be sold with Verizon as the underlying network provider.

In order to gain regulatory approval to purchase Tracfone and its associated brands, Verizon wrote a letter to the FCC stating that:

“Verizon commits to honor the rates, terms and conditions of the MVNO agreements that Verizon is assuming from TracFone, and to provide resold voice and data services consistent with the terms of those agreements for at least 2 years after the transaction closes. Verizon also commits to negotiate in good faith with an MNO to extend the terms of TracFone’s existing MVNO agreements for up to 3 years after the transaction closes if doing so would be necessary to avoid service disruption to a significant number of TracFone customers. Nothing in this commitment will require Verizon to modify the rates, terms, or conditions of any agreement it assumes from TracFone.”

In other words, Verizon said it was committed to honoring the plans and agreements that each Tracfone brand had in place with its parent networks including AT&T and T-Mobile for at least two years after formally acquiring Tracfone. This would allow Tracfone and related brand customers to continue to use the network of their choosing until at least November of 2023. Furthermore, Verizon said it was committed to extending those agreements until up to 2024 if it had to in order to avoid causing a loss of service for a significant number of its customers. So if you’re using Straight Talk on the AT&T network, Verizon was stating you could continue to do so at least until November of 2023 and possibly until November of 2024. But is Verizon already going back on its word?

The text messages and upcoming call hijacking that Verizon will force upon some of its Straight Talk customers seem like a rather aggressive way to get customers to stop using Straight Talk with networks other than Verizon. The annoyance of the hijacked calls may force some customers to switch to the Verizon network or move to another provider altogether sooner than they’d actually like. Although Verizon may still technically honor the MVNO agreements it has in place with AT&T and T-Mobile per its FCC letter, it seems Verizon isn’t actually going to make it easy for its Tracfone customers to continue to use those networks.

Simple Mobile Now Has Verizon SIMs

Earlier this month, BestMVNO reported that Simple Mobile now has an in-store-only offer of 4 unlimited lines for $100. Promo material for the offer states that Simple Mobile uses a 5G nationwide network. Simple Mobile has previously always noted in its promos and on its website that it’s powered by the T-Mobile network. But that T-Mobile branding has now also been removed from the Simple Mobile website.

A Reddit user has pointed out that Simple Mobile now has a Verizon branded SIM for 99 cents. The Verizon branded SIM card can be found alongside a T-Mobile SIM on Simple Mobile’s website here: https://shop.simplemobile.com/shop/en/simplemobile/simcards. I’m not exactly sure yet who can get the Verizon branded SIM as when you visit the link provided you are asked to input a zip code. Once I put in my zip code, the Verizon branded SIM disappeared for me. I tried zip codes from several other markets in different states and the Verizon SIM also disappeared for those zips as well. All the markets I tested have great coverage on the Verizon network too. So my guess is either the SIM card is there by mistake, Verizon is offering it as a test in a limited number of markets, or it’s only available for those using Simple Mobile’s device compatibility checker with a Verizon branded phone. Either way, it looks like Verizon branded Simple Mobile SIMs will become more readily available very soon.

Update: A website visitor has notified BestMVNO that Simple Mobile is also now selling a Verizon version of the iPhone 11. The Verizon version of the phone is hidden on the Simple Mobile website but can be found here https://shop.simplemobile.com/shop/en/simplemobile/phones/sm-iphone-11-64gb-vzn. The VZN at the end of the website address is an indicator that the phone is meant for use on the Verizon network. Furthermore, this version of the iPhone does not have any reviews. Conversely, the Simple Mobile iPhone 11 model meant for the T-Mobile network which can be found here has nearly 200 reviews.

It isn’t a surprise that Verizon would want to move its newly acquired Tracfone customers over to its network as soon as possible as it would be more profitable for them to do so. However, the manner they are going about it may be a bit in contrast to the commitment letter they wrote to the FCC.

Visible & Straight Talk Now Have iPhone SE 3 Deals, Include $200 Gift Card Offer

Visible iPhone SE 2022 Model Deal Includes $200 Gift Card

Verizon brands Visible, Straight Talk, and Total Wireless have launched iPhone SE 2022 deals. Visible probably has the best offer of the three as those who buy the device will pick up a $200 gift card. Visible is selling the phone for $429 or $17.87/mo with financing. Straight Talk and Total Wireless are both offering the phone for $379.99, a modest discount from the iPhone SE 2022’s suggested retail price of $429. Last week, several other brands offered pre-order iPhone SE discounts.

Visible’s iPhone SE 2022 $200 Gift Card Offer Details

Visible regularly offers gift cards to switchers that purchase a phone. Denominations typically range in value from $50 to $200. So Visible has launched the iPhone SE 2022 out of the gate with its best foot forward.

In order to qualify for this promo, customers must port a number into Visible from an eligible carrier within 14-days of activating their service. It should be noted, Visible’s list of eligible carriers is grossly out of date as it includes providers that are no longer in business such as Virgin Mobile, and it still calls Metro by T-Mobile by its old brand name, MetroPCS. Customers wishing to claim the offer must also complete 3-full months of service to qualify. After both terms are met, a $200 virtual gift card of the customer’s choosing will be sent, redeemable via a promo code. Visible offers gift cards from Amazon, AutoZone, and Best Buy among many other options.

Those purchasing the device should be aware that the phone is sold locked to Visible for a period of 60-days. Visible offers but one phone plan, an unlimited everything plan priced at $40/month for single lines, or $25/month when customers join a Party Pay group.

Update: Visible has upped the ante on this promo switcher deal, and is now throwing in a free pair of Apple AirPod 3 earbuds with the purchase of an iPhone SE 3.

Straight Talk’s New TV Ad For Tax Season Is All About Unlimited, While Tracfone’s New TV Ad Says No To Unlimited

Straight Talk Wireless First TV Ad Of 2022 Tax Season

Tracfone brands Straight Talk Wireless and Tracfone have both launched new TV commercials targeting different market segments. Straight Talk’s ad is focused on getting consumers to spend their tax refunds on its $45 unlimited plan. Tracfone’s new TV ad is for those who don’t need unlimited. Wave7 Research recently detailed the ads in a report the firm sent out to its subscribers.

Straight Talk Wireless “Tax Refund: $45/Month” TV Ad

Straight Talk’s latest TV ad is called “Tax Refund: $45 per Month.” It launched on 2/14 and has already aired over 700 times. The ad starts off by telling viewers that they can “find lots of ways to spend” their tax refund but not to “waste it on something silly.” Viewers are then pitched that they can “spend smarter with Straight Talk.” Straight Talk’s $45 “Silver Unlimited Plan” is then highlighted.

Straight Talk’s $45 plan includes unlimited talk, text, and data with 5GB of mobile hotspot. Data is at 4G LTE and 5G data speeds where available, however, the plan comes with fine print stating that Straight Talk reserves the right to review your account if you use more than 60GB of high-speed data during a billing cycle.

The ad goes on to tell viewers that Straight Talk uses the “nation’s largest most dependable network with nationwide 5G” to represent Verizon’s network. It concludes by stating that Straight Talk Wireless is available at Walmart and Walmart.com. Walmart is the exclusive in store retailer for Straight Talk. You can watch the full TV ad down below.

Tracfone’s New TV Ad “Influencer: $40 per Month”

Tracfone’s new TV commercial is entitled “Influencer: $40 Per Month.” The ad appears aimed at an older demographic. It starts off featuring a cartoon caricature of a person who appears to have graying hair. A voice over asks viewers “Are you an influencer? Like watching action movies on a tiny tiny screen?” The ad continues “No? Than why do you need endless data?” Tracfone’s relatively new $40/month plan is then pitched to the audience. The plan includes unlimited talk and text with 8GB of hard-capped high-speed data at up to 5G data speeds. Unused data does carry over to the next billing cycle. IDnotify identity theft protection and restoration is an additional perk included with the plan. BestMVNO detailed the plan when it launched late last summer.

The TV ad finishes with the tagline “Tracfone, Now You’re In Control.” Viewers are shown all the different places where they can purchase Tracfone including Target, Best Buy, Family Dollar, Dollar General and more. This ad also launched on 2/14. Wave7 Research notes that it has already aired over 1k times. Watch it below.

“For Tracfone, Wave7 Research is seeing a major shift in emphasis in advertising and retail toward its $40/month plan, which provides 8GB of data. Previously, at retail and in advertising, Tracfone was focused on its $20/month plan that provides 1GB of data. Under Verizon management, there is a push to boost Tracfone’s ARPU.” – Jeff Moore, Principal of Wave7 Research

Tracfone Brands Preparing To Be Available Exclusively On Verizon’s Network

Tracfone Starting To Wind Down AT&T And T-Mobile Activations

In late November of 2021, Verizon announced that it had closed on its acquisition of Tracfone and all of its associated brands. Some Tracfone brands, like Straight Talk Wireless, have always been available for use on any major carrier network in the USA, while others, like Simple Mobile and Walmart Family Mobile, are only available for use on the T-Mobile network. With Verizon’s takeover of all the Tracfone brands, it was only a matter of time before Verizon would want to move each brand over exclusively to its network. For some Tracfone brands, that time is approaching more quickly than others.

Twitter user @TracfoneGuy has shared with BestMVNO that starting on March 1st, Tracfone Master Agents/Distributors will no longer be purchasing AT&T or T-Mobile SIMs for the Tracfone brand. Only Verizon SIMs will be purchased. Master Agents will also begin to buy any surplus Tracfone branded AT&T and T-Mobile SIM inventory from their dealers. Consumers will still be able to activate Tracfone on any network at least through 6/30/2022. After that, dealers will be no longer be able to activate AT&T or T-Mobile SIMs for their customers through their activation portals. However, they’ll still be able to refill the accounts of customers using either network. It is unknown if the changes will also spillover to the Tracfone website at that time, but all bets are that they will. A recent Wave7 Research prepaid report notes that Verizon is eager to move its Tracfone customers off of other networks for profitability reasons.

Wave7 Research also noted in its latest prepaid report that Simple Mobile has been emailing its customers welcoming them to the Verizon family. Customers are being told they don’t have to make any changes at this time but they’ll receive a notification when the opportunity arises for them to be able to migrate over to Verizon’s network. New Verizon based SIM cards will be given out to those customers free of charge.

Verizon formally acquired all Tracfone brands on November 23, 2021. And it immediately began making changes to those newly acquired brands. On December 2nd, Straight Talk’s $45 plan was updated from 25GB of high-speed data to unlimited. Days later, the Total Wireless brand was also updated to have its $50 plan go from 25GB of high-speed data to unlimited. A transition away from using other networks will be one of the biggest move that Verizon makes with the brands.

Jeff Moore, Principal of Wave7 Research added: “For Verizon to only allow TracFone activations on its network was as inevitable as the sunset. There are 7 million TracFone customers using the networks of T-Mobile and AT&T. Getting these customers onto Verizon’s network will be a difficult, more drawn-out process.”

Straight Talk 1st Changes Under Verizon Ownership, $45 Plan Goes Unlimited

Straight Talk Wireless December 2021 Plan Updates

Straight Talk Wireless has made its first plan changes under Verizon’s ownership. Leading the way with change is the $45 plan which now includes unlimited data. Verizon formally announced the closing of its acquisition of Tracfone and its associated brands on November 23. BestMVNO learned of this particular plan change through a Reddit user.

Straight Talk’s $45 plan previously included 25GB of high-speed data before throttling to go along with unlimited talk and text. It also came with 10GB of mobile hotspot data. However, the hotspot feature has now been downgraded. With the plan update, the $45 plan now only has 5GB of hotspot data. Like all of Straight Talk’s other unlimited plans, it may not be truly unlimited. The plan comes with the disclaimer from Straight Talk that “we reserve the right to review your account at 60GB.” Furthermore, Straight Talk’s terms and conditions state:

“In our sole discretion, we will presume you are engaging in an unauthorized use in violation of these Terms and Conditions if, during a 30-day period, you are using more than 60 GB of data, calling for 43,200 voice minutes, or sending over 30,000 text messages (or 3,000 over a 24-hour period), placing calls of an unusually long duration, or if your data, talk or text usage is otherwise harmful or disruptive to the Carrier’s network or to our customer service levels. If we determine, in our sole discretion, that you are using your Service in violation of these Terms and Conditions or in any other manner that we deem to be unreasonable or excessive, we may interrupt, suspend, cancel, or terminate your Service.”

However, this 60GB cap, may be more of a soft cap. BestMVNO has heard several reports of customers using well in excess of that data limit without having their service interrupted. The cap may be network or location-dependent. For the time being, Straight Talk Wireless can still be used on the customer’s choice of either the AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon network.

Straight Talk Wireless does offer a new customer autopay discount on the plan. Customers who enable autopay billing will pay just $42.50/month for their first 3-months of service.

Straight Talk Has Also Adjusted Several Other Phone Plans

The $45 plan isn’t the only plan to get updated. Straight Talk’s $60/month “Unlimited International” plan also got updated from 25GB of data to “unlimited.”

Another plan change is that Straight Talk’s $55 Ultimate Unlimited plan now includes 100GB of cloud storage. It previously had none. There’s also an unconfirmed change with the $35 plan. For months Straight Talk’s $35 plan had a double data offer running on it. Straight Talk’s homepage still lists the plan as having double data. However, the plan details page no longer shows the $35 plan as having double data, an it no longer shows an end date for a double data offer. Instead, the $35 plan just shows as coming with 10GB of high-speed data before throttling, and 5GB of mobile hotspot. Previously, the plan included 5GB of high-speed data, with the double data offer increasing it to 10GB. It is unclear at this time if the double data offer has been made into a permanent plan, or if the double data fine print was accidentally removed from the plan.

With the plan changes, Straight Talk Wireless now offers four different unlimited plans. They differ in price by the amount of hotspot data included with each plan, HD video streaming vs SD streaming, cloud storage, international calling, and device insurance. You can check out the dizzying array of options on Straight Talk’s website, or review BestMVNO’s breakdown of Straight Talk Wireless plans.
